Yamaha Motor Releases Sporty Scooter NMAX from Indonesia, Global model equipped with newly-developed BLUE CORE engine - News releases
IWATA, January 26, 2015 – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo:7272) will launch the NMAX - a new sporty scooter - in Indonesia from February 2015. The new model features a body that is reminiscent of the MAX series, which has been popular in Europe since its release in late 2000, as well as a newly-developed 155cc liquid-cooled engine based on the BLUE CORE concept. Manufacturing is being undertaken by Indonesian group company PT.
The NMAX has been developed both as a global model and a leading force for business scale expansion as set out in Yamaha Motor's new medium-term management plan (2013-2015). The NMAX comes as a new face to the MAX series, which already has an expansive lineup led by the 530cc TMAX, followed by the XMAX in 400cc, 250cc, and 125cc configurations. The new model was developed with the concept "Global Prestige City Commuter" and inherits the DNA of the MAX series, with sporty handling and styling while combining practicality.
Main features include: 1) new liquid-cooled engine developed based on the BLUE CORE concept, with VVA (Variable Valve Actuation), 2) lightweight and high-rigidity frame that supports sharp and sporty handling, 3) 13-inch tire that is specially developed for this model to help provide natural handling, 4) ABS to support sporty performance (the first ASEAN scooter model to be equipped with the system), and 5) unique styling reminiscent of the MAX series.
125cc Scooter Shootout: Honda PCX v. Yamaha NMAX
That’s because the bike that consistently tops the UK sales chart is Honda’s 125cc PCX, an A1 licence compliant commuter scooter that can be ridden on L plates after passing the CBT and theory test from the age of 17. Yamaha strikes first blood with the styling of the NMAX, which looks way sharper than the Honda, especially as our test PCX came in the bland ‘Pearl Havana Brown’ option. While Honda’s £4k Forza features a new four-valve motor, the less expensive PCX, which was introduced in 2009 and updated this year, makes do with a cheaper two-valver, albeit with plenty of tech (known as Enhanced Smart Power, or eSP, in Honda-speak) to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The PCX generally tops out at 65mph, with the Yamaha squeezing out a few more mph under favorable conditions, but away from the traffic lights the Honda rider will be reading the NMAX’s number plate every time. We doubt that it will be possible to match the claimed figures on real roads, however the few hundred miles we clocked up suggests that the Honda sips just a little bit less than the Yamaha. As in the engine department, the Yamaha’s chassis does feel that little bit sharper, and the OE Dunlop ScootSmart tyres are a definite step up from the budget IRCs specced on the PCX.
Sure, there are cheaper options out there but these are both classy and well appointed, with modern engine designs and the sort of build quality and dealer support you’d expect from such top notch brands. Both have very effective LED headlights, but the Yamaha can’t match the Honda’s built in charging socket, hazard warning lights, wider dealer network and superior fuel economy.
